Dominik Kanbach, 28, benefited greatly from completing an M.Sc. program at HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management on his way to becoming a senior consultant at the Stern Stewart & Co. consulting firm. In this interview, the graduate, who was born in the North Rhine-Westphalia, describes his personal experience with the Master’s degree from HHL, the selection process and peculiarities of the Master’s program as well as career prospects.
Why did you decide to complete a Master in Management program?
Following the relatively short Bachelor program, I wanted to continue my academic training without passing on the practical side. The wealth of topics covered by the program fascinated me a great deal and allowed me to connect the focal points of strategy, finance and marketing in the best possible way. This broad spectrum particularly helps me with my current job as a consultant.
How did you choose your university?
After attending HHL’s Information Day, I applied and was invited to Admission Test Day. I was very impressed with the friendly and open atmosphere at HHL. Not only the academic staff but also business representatives and students were involved in the selection process, confirming my perception of HHL as a university with a strong practical relevance.
What did you appreciate in particular about HHL’s M.Sc. program?
I liked this special atmosphere, the “HHL Spirit“. It is characterized by strong loyal solidarity among the classmates, enormously high motivation to walk the extra mile and the special assistance provided by professors, faculty members and student services. Thanks to the M.Sc. program at HHL I not only found the career I wanted but also many good friends.
Career planning comes before career entry. How did it go for you?
With regard to career planning, I found the business presentations at HHL very helpful – throughout the term or during events such as European Ivy League soccer tournament or the HHL Energy Conference. They gave students the opportunity to talk to employees from interesting companies and make contact in a less formal manner. It is a good way to learn more about the corporate culture and the people before submitting an application, which, in my opinion, are very important factors for the career entry.
HHL’s Career Service established contact between an HHL graduate at Stern Stewart & Co. and myself while I was studying. Following the communication with this person, I decided to complete an internship at the consulting firm, which ultimately resulted in an employment offer after graduation.
How did your career progress after graduation in Leipzig?
I have been a consultant for Stern Stewart & Co. in Munich since September 2012, working on the international strategy projects of reputable companies from various industries. Within the framework of continuing education programs, I am currently on a break in order to obtain a doctoral degree as an external candidate at HHL’s Chair of Strategic Management and Family Business.
And what are your personal goals?
Following my doctoral degree, I would like to develop further within Stern Stewart & Co. and climb the next steps of my career ladder.
